Land Art
Ian Ross draws huge abstract patterns on the ground with a leaf rake. The tactile nature of the rake is quite similar to painting or writing with a calligraphy paintbrush. These massive compositions are best achieved on sandy beaches when the lunar cycle causes the largest tide swings. When the ocean pulls always from the earth, a smooth canvas is revealed, for a few hours. Making work on this scale, without creating any waste, is a motivating factor for Ross. Raising awareness for climate change and the ocean in particular, Ross finds the work to be a collaboration with the natural lines of the earth. The photo of the finished work, the sand art, sometimes only possible with a drone, is a place card in erosion and also our encroachment into the few natural spaces we have left.
